SAVE OUR CHILDREN

In Africa it's a believe that children are the glory of our old age. It is a general believe world over. My concentration is on Africa. The number of children that roam the various streets in the cities of Africa are enormous, they are left with what fate has install for them.
The issues of child labour, child trafficking, child soldier are a product of government negligence to the plight of children. The human face behind these problems is POVERTY.
It is a big challenge for every country to fight poverty especially in Africa. With the compliance to Milleniun Development Goal programme by the United Nation in fighting poverty, this problem would have been half way solve.
Thou, some non governmental organization that deal with related issues are doing some positive things, more need to be done. Government need to stand up to their responsibilty.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN NIGERIA

Domestic Violence can simply be put as any incident of threatening behaviour or abuse between adult who had been or are in relationship together, or between family members regardless of their gender.
The issue of domestic violence perpetrated against women had been in existence since the pre-colonial era in Nigeria. It was seen as a norm since the traditional leaders has no veto power over another man’s home. Besides there was no law restricting the perpetrators from committing this heinous crime against women.
However, same trend continued into the colonial and post colonial period. Inadvertently, there was drastic increase of domestic violence in the latter part of the 20th century. This was the period that Nigerian women was witnessing acids bath by their husbands, lovers or relatives. Yet the Ni9geria government both the federal and state never seem to care. No agency was set up to look in to the incessant increase of such crime and ignorance was the name of the game. This gives reason why Nigeria has a wide tolerance to domestic violence. It is seen as a personal issue because the moment the women get married she is expected to endure whatever treatment being vented on her even though his an abuse.
According to a study conducted by some organization in the country forty five percent of the women interviewed in Oyo and Lagos state respectively, are victims of violence in the family, two third of women in a suburb communities in Lagos state have experienced physical, sexual or psychological violence in the family while about fifty percent are victims of domestic violence.(Afrol News).
Apparently, most Nigeria women have one time in their life experience domestic violence.

Here is an excerpt: Yemisi is twenty eight year old, married, lives with her husband and three children in the suburb area of Lagos state.
Note: her real name is not given for security reason.

My name is Yemisi. I am twenty eight year old and married with three children. I have been married for eight years. My husband said l should be a full time house wife. I never agreed to it because l don’t like to be idle. But each time l try telling him he shout at me saying he doesn’t want to discuss the issue. I told his parents to talk to him so he can allow me do some petty trading. The parents did but he still declines without any reason rather he said he prefer me to stay at home and take care of the children. Since l got married to my husband he doesn’t take care of me a times it is my neighbour that gives me and the children food until he comes back from work. I became tired of the condition and l decided to start a trade by selling fruit. I borrowed money to start it. One day he came back from work and said he was giving me the last warning that l should stop but l said l wont stop selling the fruit. The next thing l saw was that he started beating me using any object he lays his hand upon. Eventually, he hits me with a sharp object and l fainted. I found myself in the hospital. I don’t know what how l got here.

As at time of this interview, the young woman was undergoing treatment in a private clinic. She lost two teeth.

The factors that necessitate this violence:
Fear of the unknown by the man: The man’s fears that the women will be financially independent and he loss control of her.

Insecurity: most men can not stand the fact that their wife is doing well in their chosen career.

Some men see women as a possession and not a wife nor a friend.

Most men believes women are meant to procreates and nothing more.

Obsession: when a husband or lover is obsessed hit can lead to violence. This can be seen in the case of the recently reported case on CNN of a man who locked up his daughter at the basement of his apartment, while she breeds children for him. Women that suffer acid bath are as a result of obsession from their lover or husband.

Jealousy: why would a husband be jealousy of his wife or sister you may ask? Simple the man doesn’t believe in himself.

However, victims of this domestic violence suffer a lot from many levels. It ran ges from health- they experience lot of health hazards, housing problem- they don’t have anywhere to go cause their family members will not take them in because they believes she has to endure in her husband’s house, loss the freedom to live their lives how they want. Also they live in perpetual fear.
In addition, most children who witness domestic violence unleashed on women tend to be perpetrators themselves irrespective of their gender as they grow into adulthood.
